Why I Love This Photo: The Tiny Detail In Heidi’s Portrait That Always Makes Me Smile

If you take a quick glance at this portrait of Heidi, your first thought is likely: “What an elegant, beautiful black dog.” And you wouldn’t be wrong. But there is one tiny, specific detail in this shot that always makes me laugh each time I see it.

Before we get to that, let’s talk about why this photo works so well from a technical perspective.

Angle of the shot. I love the three-quarter profile view. Because Heidi isn't looking directly at the lens, the image feels candid—as if we are quietly observing her while she’s lost in thought.

Lighting. To bring out the best in her dark coat, I placed a beauty dish about three feet away from her which created a very soft light. Here the softness of the light brings out the texture of her fur and gives her body a sculptural quality.

The framing. I also chose a tight, formal crop right in camera. It gives the image a classical, "old masters" feel that makes Heidi look truly regal.

The tongue. And then, just as you’re admiring this "majestic beast “of a dog, you see it — her tongue peeking out in the goofiest, most derpy way possible.

This one tiny detail changes the entire energy of the photo. It completely breaks the formality and adds a layer of humor that makes the portrait feel human and real. It’s the perfect "twist" on elegance—and it is, very, very Heidi.
