Why I Love This Photo: Steward, the Basset Hound
Who placed an order for Big Meaty Mitts? Because Stewart is serving up three beefy paws—and a whole lot more—in this portrait.
I love this image because the profile view really emphasizes all the distinct Basset Hound characteristics fans know and love: the humongous tank muzzle, velvety ear drapes, chunky stompers, domed head, and those soulful, heavy-lidded eyes. This boy’s got it all.
From a compositional standpoint, the image is full of echoed curves and angles. The slope of his head mirrors the slope of his tush. The angle of his snout aligns with the angle of his body, the platform piping, and even the direction of his gaze. These elements give the photo a balanced and dynamic feel.
To add the cherry on top, I love Stewart’s expression. He’s smiling at his Dad, Patrick, who’s just outside the frame. His look is one of pure love. For Stewart’s owners this made the portrait extra special.
